A marine station in the beautiful northern coast of São Paulo State, Brazil, hosting a vibrant academic community and equipped with unique facilities for the study of marine biology.

The MarineGEO site of São Sebastião Channel is based at The Centre for Marine Biology (CEBIMar), which is a specialized institute of the University of São Paulo dedicated exclusively to the study of Marine Biology. With facilities by the sea, it offers appropriate infrastructure (laboratories with running seawater, tanks for maintaining living organisms, classrooms, cafeteria, specialized library, accommodation and auditorium) for the development of scientific projects of different kind, from student research projects to broad, long-term initiatives involving large collaboration networks.

The Centre is located in the continental margin of the São Sebastião Channel, and at a short boat trip distance to important coastal habitats, including sandy beaches, mangrove forests and rocky reefs. It is also close to coastal islands of different size and environmental protection levels. Of particular interest is the Alcatrazes Archipelago, a fully MPA located 40 km offshore.

Scientific activities at the CEBIMar / USP are coordinated by a team of seven resident faculty, plus associated post-doc researchers and graduate students. Research lines are very diversified, including the ecology of coastal and oceanic habitats, ecophysiology, marine evolution, conservation, remote sensing applied to primary production and habitat mapping. There is strong expertise in the natural history and taxonomy of several marine groups, chiefly reef fish, corals, jellyfish and decapod crustaceans.

The CEBIMar / USP is an active partner of several research networks, with international collaborations becoming more frequent and intense over the last two decades. Visiting scientists experience a vibrating academic experience and benefit from affordable accommodations, lab facilities and boating services.
