Internship in Marine Biodiversity Science

Smithsonian MarineGEO

The Smithsonian Institution’s MarineGEO program seeks to recruit a motivated intern to join our team. The intern will assist with developing an iNaturalist project (https://www.inaturalist.org) to collect and serve to the public information on marine organisms observed at sites in the MarineGEO network. There is also opportunity to develop component(s) of the project of particular interest to the intern as part of the broader effort. The intern will be welcome to participate in other MarineGEO and Smithsonian activities, including regular team meetings, discussions, and workshops.

We seek a recent college graduate with strong quantitative and computer skills, including proficiency in the R statistical software and spreadsheet data manipulation, as well as knowledge of the taxonomy and natural history of marine life. The intern will be based remotely, so must be highly self-motivated, able to work independently, and must have access to a computer and internet to perform tasks full-time and participate in regular video conferences with MarineGEO staff. The internship will be paid $550-600 per week and last approximately 10 weeks, with a possibility of extension depending on available funds. Start date is negotiable but no later than 15 January 2021.

MarineGEO values diversity in all forms. This is an equal opportunity internship, and we encourage persons from any group historically under-represented in marine science to apply.
