Zach Foltz is the Station Manager for the Smithsonian’s Caribbean Coral Reef Ecosystems Program (CCRE). The CCRE Program operates a remote research facility on Carrie Bow Cay, located 15 miles off the coast of central Belize. The facility supports researchers from the Smithsonian as well as visiting research and academic institutions that conduct field work on the open ocean, coral reef, seagrass, mangrove and various other habitats. Zach is responsible for coordinating research visits with scientists and assisting them in the field as well as overseeing daily operations at the facility. Additionally, Zach is the Dive Safety Officer for the CCRE Program and the Smithsonian Marine Station in Fort Pierce. His primary research interests include coral reef fish identification and monitoring in mangrove, seagrass and coral reef habitats. 

Zach is a contributor to the Indian River Lagoon, Florida Observatory.

The Marine Global Earth Observatory (MarineGEO), directed by the Smithsonian’s Tennenbaum Marine Observatories Network (TMON), is a network of partners researching biodiversity as the heart of healthy, productive, coastal ecosystems, where marine life and people are concentrated and interact most. MarineGEO marshals the Smithsonian’s leadership in discovery and convening power to advance knowledge useful to decision-makers in supporting innovative management and protection of marine life.
