As an Assistant Research Professor at Arizona State University, Katie is a marine ecologist reconstructing long-term change in coastal ecosystems to motivate and inform their conservation. Her current research is focused on improving the health of coral reefs by pinpointing the social and ecological mechanisms of recent declines and identifying market-based strategies that can improve the sustainability of coral reef fisheries. Katie's work is interdisciplinary, spanning the fields of marine ecology, marine policy, paleobiology, and environmental economics. She was a Postdoctoral Fellow with MarineGEO from 2012-2014 studying the anthropogenic drivers of Caribbean reef declines.

The Marine Global Earth Observatory (MarineGEO), directed by the Smithsonian’s Tennenbaum Marine Observatories Network (TMON), is a network of partners researching biodiversity as the heart of healthy, productive, coastal ecosystems, where marine life and people are concentrated and interact most. MarineGEO marshals the Smithsonian’s leadership in discovery and convening power to advance knowledge useful to decision-makers in supporting innovative management and protection of marine life.
