João Gama Monteiro by the water

With a Doctorate in Marine Science, João Monteiro has vast experience in ecology, experimental design, community assessments, habitat mapping, and on using molecular tools for diversity assessments. João has participated in multiple international expeditions focused on coral ecology of Pacific coral reefs. Over the last years, he has developed a special interest in integrating novel technology (such as photogrammetry of underwater imagery and UAVs) on ecology assessments and habitat mapping of coastal ecosystems. He is currently managing research activities in several ongoing projects and developing the use of artificial intelligence, scientific diving, ROVs and UAS aerial imagery for habitat mapping, coastal monitoring, litter detection and other applications for marine science.

The Marine Global Earth Observatory (MarineGEO), directed by the Smithsonian’s Tennenbaum Marine Observatories Network (TMON), is a network of partners researching biodiversity as the heart of healthy, productive, coastal ecosystems, where marine life and people are concentrated and interact most. MarineGEO marshals the Smithsonian’s leadership in discovery and convening power to advance knowledge useful to decision-makers in supporting innovative management and protection of marine life.
